Nutritionist and child nutrition expert Elena Milayeva has recommended beetroot as an affordable vegetable that promotes overall wellness and actively supports liver health.

Speaking to Russian news website aif.ru, Milayeva highlighted the common root vegetable as a low-cost, nutrient-packed food capable of aiding essential metabolic and digestive processes.

According to Milayeva, beetroot is particularly valuable for liver health because it contains betaine. She explained that this active compound assists the liver in processing fats more effectively and accelerates the removal of toxins from the body.

Milayeva emphasized that these protective properties make beetroot especially suitable for individuals who regularly consume heavy meals or take large amounts of medication.

The human liver serves as the body's primary filtration organ, responsible for metabolizing nutrients, breaking down dietary fats, and neutralizing toxic waste products. Betaine, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative also known as trimethylglycine, is recognized in nutritional science for its lipotropic effect. It helps prevent lipid accumulation in liver cells and supports critical cellular detoxification pathways.

Nutrient Profile and Cardiovascular Benefits

Beyond its betaine content, Milayeva noted that beetroot carries an extensive range of vital vitamins and minerals. The root vegetable is packed with vitamins A, C, E, K, and B-complex vitamins, alongside essential folic acid.

Its comprehensive mineral profile includes iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, silicon, molybdenum, and chromium.

Milayeva added that beetroot contains active compounds that exert a positive influence on the operation of the cardiovascular system. Furthermore, she pointed out that the vegetable provides abundant dietary fiber, which is necessary for healthy digestive function.

Beetroot, known botanically as Beta vulgaris, has long been cultivated as a staple vegetable valued for its rich nutritional density. Medical reference works note that dietary fiber promotes regular bowel movements and nourishes beneficial gut bacteria. Additionally, beets contain naturally high concentrations of inorganic nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide to relax blood vessels, support circulation, and assist in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

Daily Serving Recommendations and Medical Warnings

To obtain the full health benefits of beetroot, Milayeva clarified that eating a single medium-sized root vegetable each day is sufficient for most people.

However, the specialist issued specific warnings for individuals with underlying medical conditions. Milayeva stressed that people suffering from allergies or pre-existing kidney diseases must consult a healthcare professional before incorporating beetroot into their regular diet.

Milayeva also recommended that individuals living with diabetes or those prone to flatulence and gastrointestinal bloating should refrain from eating raw beetroot.

Raw beetroots contain complex insoluble starches and naturally occurring oxalates. Medical reference sources indicate that oxalates can contribute to kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals, while raw plant fibers can ferment rapidly in the digestive tract, causing intestinal gas. Lightly cooking or steaming beetroots breaks down tough starches and softens fibrous cell walls, making the vegetable significantly easier to digest while preserving its core micronutrients.

The expert advice follows earlier dietary guidance from nutritionist Natalia Ipaves, who addressed whether fruits and vegetables remain safe to eat after mold is removed. Ipaves explained that safety depends entirely on the physical characteristics and moisture levels of the specific produce item, as softer foods allow mold threads to penetrate deeper than firm root vegetables.
