Milk Thistle Oil Tied to Liver Support, Outlet Reports

A tablespoon of milk thistle oil taken before breakfast may help support liver function, according to the Polish outlet Rynek Zdrowia, though the publication cautioned against overstating its "detoxifying" effects.

The outlet also noted that the oil is not the same as standardized milk thistle preparations sold as supplements.

Why the liver matters

The liver acts as the body's cleansing center, neutralizing toxins, producing bile, storing nutrients and taking part in the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, the outlet explained.

Its authors said the liver also has a significant effect on hormonal balance and overall immunity, meaning its normal function affects the whole body, which is why natural ways to support it are increasingly sought after.

What's in milk thistle oil

Milk thistle oil is one popular option, the outlet reported. Citing the United States National Library of Medicine, it said the oil contains silymarin, a complex of compounds with pronounced protective effects that supports the regeneration of liver cells and helps limit the impact of toxins and free radicals. Because of this, it may support the liver's natural regenerative processes and its capacity for detoxification.

The article explained that unsaturated fatty acids in the oil, including linoleic acid, support normal cardiovascular function, help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels and reduce inflammation in the body. Vitamin E, meanwhile, protects cells from oxidative stress and supports recovery processes.

The outlet's authors said milk thistle oil may support normal bile flow, which eases fat digestion and reduces strain on the liver. They said it has a positive effect on lipid metabolism, helping maintain proper cholesterol levels and balance between HDL and LDL fractions, and that through this it indirectly supports heart and circulatory health.

The authors added that the oil may also help stabilize blood sugar levels and improve the body's sensitivity to insulin, which matters for preventing metabolic disorders.

How to use it and when to be careful

The outlet recommended incorporating milk thistle oil into the diet in several ways. It advised buying a cold-pressed product and consuming it daily each morning on an empty stomach, saying one tablespoon stimulates the digestive system and supports the body's natural cleansing processes. The oil can also be added to cold dishes such as salads, vegetable snacks and porridge.

The publication said an alternative is an infusion made from the plant's seeds, prepared by pouring boiling water over one to two teaspoons of ground seeds and leaving it to steep for 10 to 15 minutes before drinking.

Despite its many benefits, the outlet warned that milk thistle is not suitable for everyone. It is not recommended for pregnant women or breastfeeding mothers because of a lack of sufficient research, and caution is also advised for people allergic to plants in the same family and for patients with bile duct obstruction.

The authors warned that people taking medication should consult a specialist before using milk thistle, since its active compounds can affect how certain drugs are metabolized.

They also noted that mild digestive upset can occur when first starting the supplement, though this is usually temporary, and that breaks are recommended during long-term use.
