We all want to wear one beautiful hair, healthy and with a lot of life. To achieve this, it is essential to bet on a specific shampoo, the one that best suits our hair type. So it’s time to talk about it sulfates, parabens and silicones. We tell you everything you need to know.
Experts agree: cheap is expensive. “It has been proven that the continued use of conventional shampoos saturates both the scalp and the hair itself, causing it to lose shine and vitality. This is because these products often contain chemicals that are harmful. By removing the toxins from the shampoo’s composition, not only are we getting the same results as with a conventional shampoo, but we are also going to take care of our hair and skin. The properties of the natural ingredients are very beneficial for the hair, as they do not damage the scalp and help to regenerate it, in addition to protecting against environmental pollutants,” explains Marina Morán, director of the hair company Naturalmente España.
“It is true that there is already a growing concern, not only for the planet, but also for our health. It is only necessary to see how the amount of natural and organic products has increased. We must undoubtedly move away from those factors that affect the environment and pose a potential risk to human health,” adds María Pérez de Villaamil, director of CentroMem.
Parabens, Sulfates and Silicones: Are They Really That Bad?
The experts from the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) explain in a report that parabens are especially effective against fungi and yeasts, but also against essential bacteria in the formula. They are necessary to guarantee the microbiological quality and thus protect the consumer who uses the product. In addition, the AEDV experts point out that parabens are present the lowest sensitization rates among the most common preservatives.
As for silicone, it should be noted that there are two types: soluble and insoluble. If the shampoo contains non-soluble silicones, it will cause dryness as it destroys the hair’s natural oils. Soluble silicones wash out, however.
And what about sulfates? “I position myself in particular against sulfate-free shampoos“, says Álex Sestelo. “Despite the growing offer in the cosmetic market of this type of hair products, I believe that not only are sulphates not harmful, but that certain sulphates are useful, in some cases necessary and above all safe. To do the opposite would discredit both the cosmetic industry and health authorities. Sulfates are surfactants, that is, they have the ability to dissolve fatty substances in water. In this way, the fat is emulsified with the shampoo and water and is washed away with the rinse. By themselves, they are not poisonous or dangerous. However, not all sulfates are the same and you need to know how to distinguish between the type of sulfate the shampoo contains, as there are some with a very high cleansing effect and can leave the hair and scalp dry. There are even shampoos with sulfates that have been developed for sensitive, reactive and even seborrheic dermatitis scalp,” the expert adds. “Choosing a shampoo with sulfates is sometimes absolutely necessary. For example, it can be helpful to clean the hair thoroughly if you use strong hairsprays, mousses, gels or styling gels. If the hair is not thoroughly cleaned, it can even affect the health of the hair,” he concludes.
