Russian film director Andrei Konchalovsky has begun publishing personal memories on social media detailing the production of his 1997 television miniseries The Odyssey.
The online retrospective comes as public interest in Homer's Greek epic has resurged following the announcement of a new film adaptation by director Christopher Nolan. Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta noted that the timing makes it an ideal moment to consider re-releasing Konchalovsky's project in cinemas.
Announcing the series of posts on his social channels, Konchalovsky said the legendary story was back in the spotlight. He explained that he had a personal history with the project and wanted to detail how it came together, starting with how the production initially began.
Pitching Homer to American producers
In his first post, Konchalovsky recalled a tense meeting with an American producer who grimaced while reviewing the financial estimates for the project. The executive questioned whether prime-time television audiences in the 1990s would watch a drama based on classical poetry by Homer.
Konchalovsky recounted telling the executive that anyone who failed to finish reading the original book in school would watch it, claiming that group included almost all of humanity. Although the producer did not smile at the response, he ultimately signed off on the budget estimate.
The resulting two-part television adaptation aired in 1997 with a budget of approximately 40 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive television projects of its era. Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola and filmmaker Nicholas Meyer served as executive producers on the miniseries, while American actor Armand Assante starred in the lead role of Odysseus.
Behind the scenes of the 1997 adaptation
Adapting the classical text into two episodes presented significant technical challenges for 1990s television. The storyline tracked the Trojan War, the wanderings of Odysseus, encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, Calypso, and Circe, before concluding with the return of the hero to Ithaca.
Konchalovsky explained that he avoided making a film that focused on mythology for its own sake. Instead, he centered the narrative on a human warrior who must endure trials after a lengthy war to rediscover his identity and find his way home. He added that myths age over time, but human nature remains unchanged, which he believed keeps the project relevant today.
The publication of these reflections forms part of an ongoing social media series by Konchalovsky, who plans to share further stories about the filming process. Assante previously discussed his role in the miniseries during an exclusive interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
