Adults dependent on parents seek approval, research shows

Psychology experts agree that adults who remain dependent on their parents are searching for acceptance, according to research reported by Marcelo López Chavez for Mag. The growing number of adults turning to their parents before making decisions has motivated the psychological community to examine the behavior.

While the transition to adulthood typically marks a shift toward autonomy, many individuals continue relying on parental guidance as years pass. Although reaching legal adulthood ideally means becoming self reliant, some adults still depend on parental recommendations or cannot imagine living away from home. For many people, being far from their parents feels like total suffering.

Society often criticizes this persistent reliance, but mental health science offers a different perspective. Psychologists emphasize that maintaining a close connection with parents in adult life is healthy. However, professionals warn that concern arises when emotional dependence develops.

Impact on autonomy and insecurity

Information published by Psicología y Mente indicates that emotional dependency harms an adult child capacity for personal growth and independence. Individuals who exhibit this pattern lack the necessary potential to feel, think, decide, and act on their own.

Dependent adults also experience significant insecurity in their daily lives. They believe that without their parents presence, they are exposed to making mistakes whenever they try to take control of their own lives.

Childhood origins of parental dependency

According to Psicología y Mente, this psychological pattern develops during childhood and is heavily influenced by parental behavior. Children or teenagers who did not receive adequate attention often grow into adults who constantly seek approval.

Excessive parental overprotection also plays a major role in shaping this dependency. When parents shield children from all difficulties and convey that the world is dangerous, the child confidence becomes strictly limited over the years.

López, who studied journalism at Universidad Jaime Bausate y Meza and has two years of digital media experience, reported the findings for the El Comercio publication platform.
