Russian tourist demand for autumn travel packages to Abkhazia has increased by nearly 50 percent compared to last year, according to data published by the Russian Union of Travel Industry.
Interest in trips during the autumn velvet season specifically rose by 45 percent year on year, while tour prices across the destination have increased by 10 percent since autumn 2025.
Data from domestic tour operator Alean indicates that Abkhazia accounted for 31 percent of total holiday sales across Russia and neighboring states during the current autumn booking season.
Abkhazia, a coastal resort area situated along the eastern shores of the Black Sea directly south of Russia's Krasnodar region, is a long-standing autumn destination for Russian vacationers. The autumn period, traditionally known in Eastern Europe as the velvet season, extends through September and October, offering warm sea temperatures and milder weather following the peak summer heat.
Factors shaping seasonal travel demand
Oksana Bulakh, deputy general director of Alean, said overall growth in demand faced headwinds from ongoing uncertainty surrounding entry rules for children. She noted that tourist traffic was also negatively affected by frequent aircraft arrival and departure restrictions at the nearby airport in Sochi.
The resort city of Sochi serves as the primary aviation hub for travelers bound for Abkhazia. Flights land at Sochi International Airport, located near the border, from where vacationers proceed overland. Operational disruptions at the airport occur when aviation authorities activate the Kover security protocol, an emergency plan that temporarily closes airspace and grounds aircraft.
Despite transport and border entry challenges, Bulakh explained that Alean achieved solid sales growth by expanding its portfolio of exclusive properties, particularly popular hotels operating on an all-inclusive basis.
Affordable Black Sea resort pricing
The growth in bookings comes as Abkhazia was recognized as the most affordable destination for all-inclusive hotel stays on the Black Sea coast. A one-week package tour for two adults in the region currently starts from 36,000 rubles.
The Russian Union of Travel Industry is the nation's primary trade association representing tour operators and travel agencies. Alean, one of Russia's largest domestic travel companies, specializes in resort holidays along the Black Sea coast, where all-inclusive accommodation packages bundling meals and lodging have grown in popularity.
