Police in Tokyo have arrested a key figure in Japan's largest organized crime syndicate alongside an adult film actress during a drug raid on a hotel room, local media reported. Officers detained 32-year-old Syota Sugawara, a suspected mob leader connected to the Yamaguchi-gumi syndicate, and 27-year-old adult entertainment performer Seika Abe in the capital's Toshima Ward.
The arrests took place on July 14 after law enforcement officers executed a search warrant on a room booked by Sugawara, according to Japanese news outlet Tokyo Reporter. During the search, police officers discovered approximately 0.7 grams of cocaine hidden beneath bedsheets and placed on a bedside shelf in the room.
Both Sugawara and Abe were taken into custody on suspicion of illegal drug possession. During police questioning, Sugawara admitted that the seized cocaine belonged to him. Abe, who acts in adult films under the professional pseudonym Serina Arata, denied having any knowledge of the narcotics found in the hotel room.
Police surveillance and social media networks
Law enforcement agencies had placed Sugawara under active surveillance prior to the raid after discovering that he was making frequent visits to the Toshima hotel. Police investigators identify Sugawara as a leader within a new style of criminal organization whose members operate without traditional physical offices and coordinate their activities anonymously through social media networks and messaging platforms.
The Yamaguchi-gumi is Japan's largest and most powerful yakuza organization. Founded as a loose association of dockworkers in the port city of Kobe in 1915, the syndicate grew over the decades into a vast criminal network involved in gambling, extortion, real estate, and financial fraud. In recent years, Japanese authorities have enacted increasingly strict anti-syndicate legislation, known as anti-boryokudan laws, designed to freeze gang bank accounts, restrict commercial activities, and penalize corporate dealings with recognized mobsters.
These stringent legal restrictions have forced younger yakuza factions to move away from traditional gang headquarters and conspicuous insignia. Instead, modern operators increasingly rely on decentralized digital networks, encrypted communication applications, and temporary meeting locations such as hotel rooms to conduct business while evading police monitoring.
Former athletic prodigy and legal proceedings
Prior to entering the adult entertainment industry, Abe was a highly successful competitive athlete. She began intensive swimming training at three years of age and earned recognition as a childhood prodigy in the sport. Abe competed at a high level for 17 years before a career-ending injury forced her retirement from competitive swimming, after which she adopted the stage name Serina Arata and began appearing in adult videos.
The arrest occurred in Toshima Ward, a prominent commercial and entertainment district in northern Tokyo that includes the major transport and nightlife hub of Ikebukuro. Japan enforces some of the world's strictest anti-narcotics legislation under the Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Law, under which illegal possession of cocaine carries severe criminal penalties, including multi-year prison sentences. Following their arrest, both Sugawara and Abe remain under investigation by Tokyo police as prosecutors decide whether to formally indict the pair on drug charges.
