Forgetting someone’s name while clearly remembering their face is not a memory problem, psychological research cited by Silicon Canals suggests. The brain stores faces and names as two entirely separate types of information, with names processed last.
The phenomenon has a name: the Baker/baker paradox. Researchers McWeeny, Young, Hay and Ellis demonstrated it in 1987 by telling participants about people in photographs, using the word baker either as a surname or as an occupation. The surname was recalled far less often than the profession. An occupation carries a web of associations (flour, ovens, the smell of fresh bread), while a surname arrives with no mental hooks at all. Psychologist Gillian Cohen, who named the effect, noted that proper names carry almost no semantic content, unlike ordinary words.
Scientists Vicki Bruce and Andrew Young described in the mid-1980s how the brain recognises people in stages: it first matches the face to stored images, then retrieves general knowledge about the person, and only at the very end attempts to pull up the name. Names sit on a separate, much narrower processing pathway than everything else the brain knows about a person.
Research into school yearbooks found that people could recognise former classmates’ faces with roughly 90 percent accuracy even 35 years after graduation, dropping only to about 75 percent after 48 years. Their ability to recall the same classmates’ names fell away far more quickly.
A second obstacle is what psychologist Malcolm Brenner called the next-in-line effect in 1973. In the seconds before a person must introduce themselves, the brain is busy composing its own words rather than taking in someone else’s name.
How to make names stick
- Repeat the name aloud immediately after an introduction.
- Attach a rhyme or association to make it stick.
- Write the name down within an hour of meeting.
- If it slips, ask again right away rather than weeks later.
