Cat owners have long puzzled over why their pets sit motionless, staring at an empty spot on the wall as if something is there. Publication The Spruce Pets has offered several scientific explanations for the behavior, moving past folk theories that cats can see ghosts or other invisible beings.
One reason relates to cats' sharp eyesight. While cats see fewer colors than humans, they generally notice far more detail, so an insect, an unusual shadow or a flash of sunlight on the wall can catch their attention.
Memory and hearing may play a role
Specialists also point to cats' episodic memory. A cat may remember that sunlight hits the wall in an unusual way at a certain time each day and sit waiting for the moment to happen again.
Sharp hearing offers a second possible explanation. Cats may be reacting to sounds behind the wall that humans cannot detect, such as water moving through pipes, wind hissing in ventilation, a mouse scurrying, or neighbors' footsteps.
When staring signals a health problem
The behavior can sometimes be a warning sign. Older cats staring blankly at walls and meowing loudly at night may be experiencing feline dementia.
A fixed stare at one spot can also appear with feline hyperesthesia syndrome, alongside symptoms such as attacking or excessively licking the tail and unusual sensitivity to touch. Owners who notice these signs are advised to record video and show it to a veterinarian.
If no other troubling symptoms are present, there is no cause for concern, according to The Spruce Pets, since a cat's senses are simply far sharper than a human's.
