Venezuela Earthquakes: Funvisis Reports Five Tremors

The Fundación Venezolana de Investigaciones Sismológicas recorded five earthquakes across Venezuela on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026. The agency monitors all seismic activity through its national network of service stations.

The strongest tremor occurred 13 km west of Irapa at 12:08 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.5 Mw and a depth of 22.6 km. Its epicenter was located at latitude 10.595 N and longitude -62.696 W.

Earlier in the day, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck 21 km northeast of Isla los Roques at 01:35 a.m. at a depth of 5.0 km, centered at 11.998 N and -66.654 W. At 06:37 a.m., a magnitude 2.5 quake occurred 38 km northwest of Los Teques at a depth of 5.0 km, located at 10.590 N and -67.288 W.

In the afternoon, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake was registered 31 km southeast of Caicara de Maturín at 1:53 p.m. at a depth of 97.4 km, with an epicenter at 9.573 N and -63.488 W. Minutes later, at 1:59 p.m., a magnitude 2.5 earthquake occurred 11 km west of Curarigua at a depth of 1.2 km, centered at 9.979 N and -70.038 W.

Seismic measurement and predictability

Funvisis is the official body responsible for conducting seismological studies and maintaining observation stations. The agency noted that despite scientific efforts, earthquakes cannot be predicted, making public emergency readiness critical.

An earthquake is a violent shaking of the ground caused by the sudden rupture and movement of tectonic plates along fault lines in the Earth crust. Funvisis explained that magnitude is a numerical scale derived from seismographs showing energy released, while intensity measures damage and effects on people and buildings.

The agency also defined seismic silence as a prolonged period without significant seismic activity in a region. This silence can indicate an accumulation of tectonic stress and a higher risk of a future earthquake.

Tectonic plate interactions

Venezuela is situated where the Caribbean plate and the South American plate meet. The Caribbean plate covers Central America and the Caribbean Sea, while the South American plate supports almost all of South America and part of the Atlantic ocean floor.

The two plates interact in northern South America through lateral sliding and subduction zones. In subduction zones, a larger plate sinks beneath a lighter plate toward the Earth mantle.

Emergency guidelines and tsunami response

To prepare for earthquakes, Funvisis recommended keeping an emergency backpack. Essential contents include hygiene products, warm clothes, cash, communication tools, and a first aid kit with bandages, gauze, alcohol, pills, and hydrogen peroxide.

The kit should also contain non-perishable foods like canned tuna, cereal bars, chocolates, and nuts, along with items for infants, women, and elderly adults. During a major tremor, people should send text messages instead of making phone calls to avoid overwhelming mobile networks.

If an official tsunami warning is issued or the sea recedes, official guidelines direct people to evacuate to high ground, flood-free areas, or designated meeting points. If high ground is unavailable, individuals should go to an upper floor or the roof of a sturdy structure.
