United Airlines will expand its transatlantic network next summer by launching 11 new direct routes connecting major American cities to European destinations, aviation news outlet Avianews.com reported.
The expansion by the carrier, which stands among the top three largest airlines in the United States, will operate out of hub airports in Washington, New York and Denver. United Airlines will also bring back four seasonal European services that it operates this year, increasing the frequency of flights across the Atlantic Ocean.
The new flight schedule is set to begin in early April 2027, with direct connections gradually rolling out across the spring and early summer months. The carrier's strategy relies heavily on modern narrowbody aircraft capable of flying long transatlantic distances while carrying fewer passengers than traditional widebody jets.
Schedule of new transatlantic services
New York Newark will serve as the primary gateway for nine of the new routes. Flights from Newark to Luxembourg will launch on April 2, 2027, operating daily using Airbus A321XLR aircraft. Daily service from Newark to Marseille in southern France starts on June 4 using the same plane type, while flights to Toulouse in southwestern France will operate daily from Washington starting April 26.
United will launch services from Newark to Ljubljana in Slovenia on May 12, running four times weekly on Boeing 767-400ER aircraft. Transatlantic flights from Newark to Olbia on the Italian island of Sardinia begin May 27, operating three times a week on Boeing 767-300ER jets. A four-times-weekly service from Newark to Catania on the island of Sicily starts May 28 on Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
Spanish destinations will also gain direct connections from Newark. A service to Ibiza will launch on May 31, flying four times a week on Airbus A321XLR aircraft, followed by a three-times-weekly service to Valencia starting June 2 on the same aircraft model. Flights from Newark to Terceira in the Portuguese Azores archipelago will start on June 9, running three times weekly on Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes.
In addition to Newark, Washington will gain a direct route to Milan starting May 28, operating three times a week. Denver International Airport will offer a new daily service to Paris beginning May 27.
Aircraft strategy and returning seasonal routes
A key technical feature of the expansion is the deployment of narrowbody Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on transatlantic routes. These single-aisle planes accommodate up to 200 passengers, making it viable for the airline to offer frequent flights to secondary European markets where passenger demand is not large enough to fill traditional long-haul widebody aircraft.
Alongside the 11 new destinations, United Airlines plans to restore four seasonal routes from New York for the summer 2027 travel season. These returning direct flights will connect New York with Split in Croatia, Bari in Italy, Glasgow in Scotland, and Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Inflight internet technology developments
In broader aviation industry developments, German flag carrier Lufthansa completed its first passenger flight on an aircraft equipped with Starlink satellite internet technology. The high-speed connectivity antenna was installed on an Airbus A320neo registered as D-AINM, which currently operates flights within Europe.
Lufthansa plans to expand Starlink satellite internet across its network. By the end of 2026, the German airline intends to install the Starlink system on 10 additional aircraft within its main fleet as well as jets operated by its regional subsidiary Lufthansa City.
