Roman Martsun, a young Ukrainian athlete from the Slavska community in Lviv region, climbed all six of the Ukrainian Carpathians’ highest peaks in a single day, covering more than 60 km along the Chornohora ridge.
According to Zakarpattia Online, each of the six summits exceeds 2,000 metres. Martsun’s route took him over Hoverla, Petros, Rebra, Hutyn Tomnatyk and Brebeneskul before he finished at Pip Ivan Chornohirsky.
He completed the feat in 13 hours, 27 minutes and 31 seconds, moving at an average speed of 4.5 km/h. He made the journey without a guide or companion, carrying a backpack of around 20 kg containing a tent and necessary equipment.
The Carpathian traverse, Martsun said, was one stage of preparation for a more ambitious goal: to summit all 14 of the world’s eight-thousanders.
