"something on my mind" : Young retiree Jo-Wilfried Tsonga already has an idea for retraining

On May 24, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ended his career as a professional tennis player after a sensational final match on the Roland-Garros clay courts. The Frenchman is back in his first months as a young retiree…

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was in tears as she said goodbye to tennis. On May 24, Manceau played the last match of his long career in the first round of the Roland-Garros tournament. Against Casper Ruud, Tsonga had a great fight, especially by winning the first set of the match. Unfortunately, former French number 1 suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the match and eventually lost in four sets (6-7, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6). Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in a poignant speech after she was eliminated as synonymous with the end of her career, said:I’m here without the racket that will be my best friend for 30 years. Being a father has reshuffled the cards in my life. My family is my priority again and I hope the world calms down while I am at peace today. Thank you Roland-Garros, thank you Mr Tennis, I love you.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was in Tignes on the occasion of an event organized by “Les Étoiles du sport”, returned to his first months as a young retiree in an interview with the press. The 37-year-old man makes no secret of his difficulty in accepting his new life:The first few months were a little difficult, you feel a little empty.“, says the former player in the comments reported Eurosport. “I got used to having daily, short-term and long-term goals, and all of a sudden it’s gone. All the routines we put in place also disappear. Tennis was occupying 100% of my time. We lived tennis, we ate tennis, we slept tennis… All my time was devoted to this and it suddenly became empty. Nothing is left, there is no atmosphere anymore, there are stadiums like embers. It’s true that the first two months were a bit difficult, but now it’s fine. I am well surrounded by my family.

The thing I miss the most is the atmospheres.“, continues Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who has a special relationship with the public: “I’ve been to Bercy, it’s been a long time since I’ve been there. The only thing I said to myself that I would like to relive is the atmosphere, getting on the field with the people, exchanging with the people after a big point. This is something I really miss and will miss for the rest of my life if I don’t suddenly do another artistic work. I do the rest with great pleasure.“If he’s still playing tennis, “Jo-Wil” has other hobbies, and most importantly: “First of all, I really want to spend time with my children. Because even though they were traveling with me, I wasn’t always available. Doing things where we go uphill for three hours, like I did with Martin Fourcade. It made me discover the whole chain of the Alps, it was a privileged moment, it was extraordinary. I play padel, I play again in the football club in my village.

When asked what were the best moments of his career, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga replied: “There are many, I could write one or a few books“, before announcing that he would seriously consider becoming a writer: “It’s actually something that’s been on my mind. Why shouldn’t I write anecdotes that I couldn’t tell when I was an actor to tell the general public? I was afraid to see how it would be perceived. Now I can say what I want and present the experience as it really is.”
