Meredith Gray is heading in a new direction. In the closing moments of the April 7 episode, Meredith announced she was ready to “start over”.
Nick is undergoing transplant surgery on Gray Sloan, so he’s in Seattle for now. He will transplant a pig kidney to a brain-dead patient. This has never been done successfully before and could change the game in the medical world.
Taryn goes to Schmidt and tells him that the residence will be overhauled today. His residency program is in jeopardy and he’s begging her to return to work. Schmidt soon discovers that her mother has shared negative things about the hospital, which sparks an argument. Her mother undresses as she climbs the stairs and falls backwards.
Schmidt’s mother faints. Schmidt seeks help from Richard and must perform minor surgery in the basement to keep his mother alive. When she starts bleeding, Schmidt panics. Fortunately, help comes just in time.
Bailey chases Meredith.
Medical Accreditation Board members come to Gray Sloan. All doctors are under control that day. Bailey remains positive about everything, despite her online residency program. Richard is evaluated by the doctor the same day, so he cannot be interviewed by the council. Counselors question all doctors to get a good idea of what’s going on at the hospital.
Richard’s medical evaluation is done by Kai and Richard. In the middle of the investigation, Richard calls Hamilton as he tries to catch Meredith. He leaves and later explains to Bailey what happened to Schmidt. Of course, Bailey has no idea that Hamilton and Nick are working hard to get Meredith to come to Minnesota.

When she finds out about this, Bailey confronts Meredith with Minnesota. “This program has grown you. I raised you,” she says. Bailey starts getting aroused and then does anything for Meredith. Bailey calls Meredith selfish and uncovers Meredith’s past. It is a low total threshold value. Meredith goes back to Bailey and tells her that she can’t talk to him or Nick that way. It suddenly becomes clear that something is wrong with Bailey.
Meredith initially thinks that Bailey may have had a heart attack. Despite Bailey’s harsh words, Meredith still loves him. Bailey hasn’t had a heart attack, but Maggie insists she needs to slow down before she develops a heart condition.
Meredith leaves
Link meets Kai and Amelia. Kai politely introduces himself to Link. Their entrance is interrupted by the ambulance and Schmidt and her mother show up. Richard is finally being interviewed by the councillors, and the first season has some incredible flashbacks. He says he’s ready to step down if necessary to ensure future generations can train at Gray Sloan. Meanwhile, Schmidt explains to Hamilton about the residency schedule and Richard. Later, Richard discovers that he has successfully passed his assessment.
There aren’t enough surgeons at the hospital to have an influential track record, though council members say residents of Gray Sloan seem enthusiastic about their work. Gray Sloan is on parole, and Bailey has a few weeks to turn things around for reconsideration. As Bailey learns about all this, Meredith tells Nick she’s ready to “start over.” He decided to leave Gray Sloan and take the job in Minnesota.
