Actress and singer Shonka Dukureh, who currently stars in Baz Lhurmann’s new movie ‘Elvis’, died yesterday in Tennessee at the age of 44.

Director Baz Lhurmann and the entire crew of the currently in theaters “Elvis” are in mourning. On Thursday, July 21, American media announced the tragic death of actress and singer Shonka Dukureh, one of the stars of the movie.

Alongside the brilliant Austin Butler playing the King in this critically acclaimed biopic, Shonka Dukureh plays the role of gospel singer Big Mama Thornton, who first sang the title of “Hound Dog” later taken on by Elvis.

This is the first screen appearance for the 44-year-old actress, who was found unresponsive in her Nashville, Tennessee apartment where she lives with her children. He was one of them who found his mother unconscious and alarmed the neighbors. Despite the rapid response of emergency services, they were unable to bring him back to life. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the singer’s cause of death.

The artist, who also shared the Coachella stage with Doja Cat this year, had an acting diploma from Fisk and an education diploma from Trevecca Nazarene.

In an interview with a radio station last month, Shonka Dukureh said she taught third grade for a while before working with inner-city youth on after-school and summer programs.

Australian director Baz Lhurmann, who was blown away by the disappearance of his actress, gave her a beautiful tribute on Instagram: “A special light has gone out today and the biopic’s family heart is broken by Shonka Dukureh’s disappearance.
