Tonight, Oscar has made his decision. While the ceremony was primarily marred by Will Smith’s slap on Chris Rock, it still had the merit of crowning one movie in particular: CODA. And this film is not so foreign to French cinema because it is quite simply the American adaptation of La famille Bélier.
Directed by Sian Heder, this remake of Éric Lartigau’s feature film won three statuettes in Los Angeles. However, it didn’t start out as a favourite, far from that. The Netflix movie The Power of the Dog, which was crowned with the best director Oscar by Jane Campion, was in favor of the predictions. But the winner is the deaf actor Troy Kotsur, the Oscar for Best Supporting Role, and the CODA, which carries marvelous renditions of 1987’s Best Actress Marlee Matlin.
Named in three categories, Sian Heder’s film made no mistake, as it won the best adaptation statuette (hence best picture and best supporting role) alongside two other awards. Unlike The Power of the Dog, which only won one award out of 12 nominations. Note that this is the first time in history that a movie broadcast on the AppleTV+ platform has won an Oscar for best picture.
