Gerry Turner, ABC’s first Golden Bachelor, married Theresa Nist on Thursday during a live ABC broadcast with ex. Bachelor Nation Couples and participants attending desert wedding in California.
Turner choked up as Nist walked down the aisle in her designer dress. A lively Susan Noles, who vied for Turner’s love The golden bachelorled the ceremony.
“I stood in front of you and started to feel something I didn’t expect,” Nist said of that first day The golden bachelor. “I have seen you to be the most wonderful, kind and compassionate person. I learned to love you.”
“When I think about all the decisions we made tonight to be in this position, the hand of God and the winds of fate shaped this moment,” Turner said. “I learned that you are the woman I cannot live without.”
The two-hour special, hosted by Jesse Palmer, had the feel of an awards show broadcast Bachelor party Star Charity Lawson and Golden bachelor Contributor Kathy Swartz serves as a Gold Carpet Correspondent at La Quinta Resort & Club outside Palm Springs. Swartz interviewed contestants such as Turner’s daughters and fellow contestant Leslie Fhima, the runner-up whose heart was broken on national television when the Golden Bachelor chose Nist instead.
“At our age we should celebrate love and I was very good friends with Theresa,” Fhima told Swarts. “We supported each other… and I’m so happy for her and Gerry.”
The special began with Turner and Nist bringing their families together for Christmas, where they talked about meeting over milkshakes (and almost dying on an LA freeway) and registering for wedding gifts on Amazon. (Product placement alert!). We then saw them enter the resort in a Mercedes convertible to meet a wedding planner who had carefully selected all their china and flowers for the wedding.
Nist was excited about this, especially since her first wedding was in a basement.
Turner then tried on wedding rings with Neil Lane, while Nist altered her first wedding dress in 51 years at a Badgely Mischka boutique with the designers in attendance. I
Back at the pre-wedding party, the festivities were temporarily put on hold when Brayden Bowers from season 20 of the The Bachelorette and season 9 of Bachelor in paradise made a suggestion about this Bachelor Nation Star Christina Mandrell. Shouting, “Put it on, put it on” (ie the Neil Lane ring), she asked if that was the reason they had just gotten a manicure.
“You’re so annoying,” Bowers responded on live television. Aren’t shows great?
Up until that point, nothing about the special felt particularly embarrassing or exploitative — until ABC decided to have some of the Golden Bachelorettes celebrate with Nist by posing for boudoir photos. A quartet of Chippendales dancers then performed for the women and gave the bride a lap dance. Stylish!
After the special event began at 8:00 PM ET, the actual ceremony did not begin until an hour and 15 minutes later.
The Golden Bachelor’s wedding is not the first Bachelor of Education Story. The very first Bachelorette, Trista Rehn, received this honor when she married Ryan Sutter, and this episode aired in 2003. Since their divorce in 2017, Evan Bass and Carly Waddell were the last couple to walk this path.
