Lightning in the world of Egyptology! In 2000, French archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team announced that they had discovered the legendary city of Thônis-Héracleion at a depth of 6 m in the bay of Aboukir, east of Alexandria. However, the city remained almost forgotten. Although it was mentioned by ancient historians and in constructions, no traces remained. In the late 1990s, granite blocks were identified by Franck Goddio. Excavations reveal many treasures: statues, ritual objects, the funeral trough and the tragic end of Heracleion. The area fell victim to an earthquake that caused landslides in the 2nd century AD, followed by a devastating tidal wave for the city. Only a few islets would be preserved, which would have disappeared in the 8th century after a new disaster.
