Officials said hikers found human remains on a mountain in Southern California on Saturday, where actor Julian Sands disappeared five months ago.
The body, which was found in a wilderness area near Mount Baldy, at around 10 a.m. was taken to the coroner’s office for identification, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Julian Sands, an avid hiker and mountaineer, was reported missing on January 13 after attacking the summit rising 3,048 meters east of Los Angeles. The region suffered severe storms during the winter months.
On Friday, his family made their first statement since Julian Sands’ disappearance.
“We continue to cherish Julian’s bright memories as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, nature and art lover, original and collaborative artist.”he said in the statement.
Julian Sands is a 65-year-old British actor best known for his role inA room with a viewe” (1985). He is married to journalist Evgenia Citkowitz and they have three adult children.
The search, which involved 80 volunteers and officials, resumed on 17 June after a temporary break.
Police have conducted eight ground and aerial searches since the actor’s disappearance.
“Despite recent warming, parts of the mountain are inaccessible due to extreme mountain conditions”. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said last week that many areas contain steep terrain and valleys, “where there is still more than three meters of ice and snow”.
Mount Baldy is considered one of the most dangerous peaks to climb in California.
Six people died as crews searched more than 100 times, according to the Los Angeles Times, as thrill seekers and seasoned hikers alike were drawn to the challenge of this mountain.
