The life ahead of you (France 2): "Two gay teenagers inviting each other into the audience hall is extremely rare"

Awarded with the double translation award at the 2022 La Rochelle Novel Festival, Maïra Schmitt and Zoé Héran tenderly embody two young people who oppose everything but their feelings.

Lisa and Violette are extremely endearing characters. Can you tell us more about them?

Maira Schmitt: Lisa is a young girl from a very classical, conservative and Catholic family. She never felt integrated or close to her classmates in high school, she. She cannot be the person she wants to be.

Zoe Heran: Violette has a very introverted side, she doesn’t let herself push herself even though she remains a 17-year-old who takes things very seriously. But he’s not one to give up.

Did you take advantage of your last memories when you were young?

I’ve only played adolescent characters (especially in 2011’s Tomboy by Céline Sciamma, editor’s note). A universe I know very well. The important thing is to really pay attention to emotional intelligence that doesn’t change with age.

Maira: I tried to rediscover the feelings of first love, where everything increased tenfold and the other was our ideal, our universe.

What was most important to you when you agreed to play Violette and Lisa?

Maira: Above all, it was to show this kind of history in public service. It’s quite rare for two gay teenagers to invite themselves into the audience room. Violette’s father, played by David Kammenos, utters a beautiful phrase when his daughter comes out: “We were afraid you were telling us something serious…”

This sentence sounds good. For them, he says, this big announcement is somewhat anecdotal.

Maira: Lisa’s parents are very different, they are persuaded to look after her, telling their daughter that she should not like women.

The TV movie shows that even when you think your family is supporting you, you can suffer and become a victim of homophobia…

Maira: Yes. This reveals a sad truth. Still, we are lucky today. Thanks to social networks, TV series and cinema, the word became free. Of course, situations are still difficult, it depends on families, environment, friends … Taking responsibility loudly and clearly remains a brave act.

Inside life ahead, We see the terrifying power of social networks. What kind of relationships do you have?

Maira: For me, social media just reflects the state of the world and I don’t have to look at my phone to know it’s a disaster.

I’ve already been the victim of a wave of harassment on Twitter. Luckily for me, I wasn’t 17, I was able to manage…

What future would you like to envision for your characters?

I think Violette will bloom and distance herself from the critics…

Maira: And Lisa will free herself. As he grows up, he will realize that in order to improve, he will have to make his own choices and move away from his family… As for his parents, I hope they accept him for who he is.
