"there was a lot of ridicule between us" : Zazie talks about her relationship with other members of The Voice jury

Before The Voice’s semi-finals, Zazie frankly told Télé 7 Jours that she’s returning to the show after a five-year hiatus. An opportunity to discuss the 59-year-old artist’s relationship with other members of the jury, Amel Bent, Vianney, Bigflo & Oli.

How did you feel when you took the red seat after five years?

It was quite fun and exciting. I may have done the show a few times, as soon as the blind auditions start the magic happens and I discover these sounds that have never been heard before. And then, I have other coaches. I know Amel Bent, our post-show DJ at Restos du Coeur. (Laughs) I had already met Vianney at Les Enfoirés but knew very little about Bigflo & Oli. I felt we were going to have fun with these different generations… and I was right! There was a lot of teasing between us, but always with kindness.

You often joked about your age. A way to neutralize the taunts of your comrades?

My job is to teach about it. As a woman, it’s important to connect with what we are deep down, even if society imposes something else on us. But beyond that, there are times when we face our age, not with wrinkles but with references.

We’ve seen you cry a few times… Any particular reason?

That’s a good question because I’m awesome! (Laughs) Let’s just say I’m closer to my feelings than ever before. We film what happens in this program, we do not try to “produce” it. No calculations. As a coach, you don’t see the cameras, you forget they exist, and you lose the control you usually have on television. I try to keep distance most of the time. But they arise when emotions create traffic jams. We naturally return to what we are. I am also HPE (high emotional potential, editor’s note).

Do you see it as an asset?

For an artist it is, because it gives an antenna to anything that can happen in a concert hall, at a rehearsal or on stage. Sound. For example, before I buzzed about Esme, who has Tourette’s syndrome, I couldn’t understand why it aroused so much emotion: She didn’t have the most beautiful or technical voice. And then, when the chair turned, I held…

But this sensitivity can turn into a double-edged sword, as in the Battles and Cross Battles trials…

As you said ! I’ve always hated Battles where the coach has to decide who stays. It is the people who decide in Cross Wars. It may seem easier for us, but we find ourselves reacting childishly, for example: “ This is not fair! I didn’t understand the public’s choice about Max Novik. I took your decision seriously. But I know we will hear about this incredible artist soon. He’s already working on his songs!

This season, you have regularly emphasized the freedom of your protégés. A quality you promote?

I often say to Talents: ” First of all, do not confuse the source with the faucet. You will always be the source, no matter how muddy! Faucets, that’s what we offer you. Two jobs are different, ours is to protect our freedom. I highly value mine. That’s probably why I have a thirty-year career.
