Laurent Ruquier (Children of TV): "I especially like discovering people."

He has been having fun like a kid in the presentation of this show for nearly six years. Is it his priority? Mixture of generations.

The end of traditional television is often announced. However, this program records an audience of close to 3 million every Sunday. What are you thinking ?

Laurent Ruquier: It’s true that teens are more likely to watch TV shows on their smartphones. But the two vectors serve each other: the concept of Children of Television provides an opportunity to show quotes on social networks. On the contrary, our program mixes well-known stars and sometimes even a bit of seniors with people from stand-up, YouTube, TikTok… Recently, Marie-Pierre Casey (86 years old, editor’s note) and stand-leader Tania Dutel (30 years old). I’m always in favor of mixing generations. We tried everything in France 2, for example putting together Steevy and Claude Sarraute.

Do you have a favorite among your guests?

Not particularly. I especially like to explore people. A very meaningful example is Paul El Kharrat, whom I do not know, who does not follow. 12 noon shots, in TF1, which he left after 152 victories in 2019. For me it was “The” meeting: a 23-year-old boy, terrific, cultured, not just a memory machine. He has since been a member of Les Grosses Têtes (RTL).

Your guests’ “pots” are the best on show. Which personal pot makes you laugh?

My beginnings are in Paris Kiosque in 1987 in Region 3, France. At that time, I was doing my public service because I was a conscientious objector. I sent messages to singer Jacques Mailhot. Then he came and asked me to write a column. I chained the puns badly, but this put me in the stirrup. Fortunately, we are improving over the years.

A Magical Couple with Stéphane Plaza, Valérie Mairesse and Jeanfi Janssens! Your play called was a huge success…

This is an unexpected victory, because it has been sleeping in my drawers for ten years. I took my comrades from Les Grosses Têtes to the Plaza looking for something to play during a photo safari in Africa. The track will be released on M6 in June.

Another play, another success, I’d rather stay with Michèle Bernier, who recently expressed her desire to stage a musical with her daughter Charlotte at Télé 7 Jours. Would you be tempted to produce them?

He didn’t tell me about it. At one point, we thought about remaking the musical. I’ve already seen myself. The project was canceled because Charles Aznavour wanted us to add his new songs. But that’s not what people are looking for. Today we have to try to convince Aznavour’s son-in-law, Jean-Rachid (Kallouche), who is the producer. Michèle could have played the teacher and her daughter as one of the students in the musical. You just gave me an idea! (laughs)
