Rapper Afroman is facing a lawsuit from Ohio police who claim he violated their privacy by using photos of them breaking into his home.
Afroman’s (real name Joseph Foreman) home was raided in August 2022 by the Adam’s County Sheriff’s Office. They searched for drugs and suspected kidnapping victims.
No charges were filed as a result of the raid. However, surveillance cameras and cell phone footage of Foreman’s wife were captured. These images were used in subsequent videos mocking the situation.
“I asked myself, as a powerless black man in America, what can I do about the police who kicked down my door, tried to kill me in front of my children, stole my money and turned off my cameras?” Foreman said. in one NPR interview. “And all I could think about was making a funny rap song about them and making some money, using the money to pay for the damage they caused and moving on.”
Four deputies, two sergeants and a detective from a sheriff’s office are part of Foreman’s trial. They asked that all media depicting them be removed.
“I thought these big bad cops… were getting beat up and bullied by these little cheesy rap songs I made about them,” Foreman told NPR. “I’m like, ‘Oh my god, are you letting me know my raps work on you?’
Afroman is best known for his song Because I Got High.
