Never give a piston an even break was a 1941 film directed by WC Fields. But that could have been Bill Maher’s topic real time friday night
From Donald Trump’s latest foibles to TikTok’s raison d’être in the US and the growing lost generation of young men, Maher and his guests tried to make sense of a world that seems to be faltering in its struggle for solutions.
Finally, Maher turned his guns on Nepo babies, the children of celebrities who feel like they’ve hit a triple count when they’re born on third base.
Maher’s New Rules feature focused on the long line of Hollywood stars who found an advantage through their connections, beginning with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. “That doesn’t make them bad people or untalented,” Maher said. “But let’s also admit they weren’t the only ones who could have done it.”
He added, “So enjoy the good life Nepos. Don’t say you don’t have a great advantage.” As Maher noted, “This is show business. Getting your foot in the door is 80% of it!”
As evidence for this theory, Maher pointed to how acting works. “Yes, there are difficult roles,” he admitted. But since kids, Vin Diesel, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Segal, and yes, even Bill Maher can do it, it’s not nuclear physics.
Maher pointed out that sport is one of the last bastions of meritocracy as show business, politics and model nepotism run rampant.
“There are no fake babies in sports,” Maher said. “Leyla Ali didn’t beat 21 opponents by hitting them with their birth certificate.”
While Maher admits he trusts almost no one — including those on dating shows who punch them in the face — he believes the NBA’s 450 players are the very best in the world.
The concept of merit is under attack everywhere except in sports, Maher concluded. “It’s a terrible problem for Democrats — when they’re on a plane, they want a cockpit that looks like America. But they also want someone who knows how to fly the plane.”
The panel discussion portion of the show featured podcaster and author Scott Galloway and The Atlantic Ocean Co-author and author of give people money Annie Lowrey.
Their lengthy discussion centered on TikTok (it should be banned outright, Galloway said), climate change and population control (“We don’t need fewer people,” Lowrey said, but we need to make better use of the resources we have), and social security. Survival potential (increase in FICA cap, both panelists said).
Previously, author and humorist David Sedaris spoke about his work at a state mental hospital when he was 14 years old.
