Hit game program The traitors has been renewed for a second season by the BBC.
In one of the least surprising commissions of the year so far, the publisher has greenlit a 12-episode series of two of the Claudia Winkleman-hosted game show, in which a group of “married” try to outwit three “traitors” . while I live in a castle. The group takes part in challenges and every night one of the “traitors” is “banished” from the castle and another is “killed”. Word of mouth was all the British television industry could talk about during the Christmas season and was praised for its spectacular drama, diversity and diversity of authentic participants.
The show attracted more than 3 million viewers per episode overnight for the BBC when it aired around Christmas time and was according to the BBC the biggest new youth series of the year. Produced by Studio Lambert in the UK, the original Dutch format has been sold worldwide and most recently aired on Peacock in the US, where it will be hosted by Alan Cumming.
Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert, said: “We were delighted that so many viewers of BBC One and BBC iPlayer enjoyed the first season so much,” said Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert.
“They told us they enjoyed the drama and entertainment as we watched our players judge each other, often jump to the wrong conclusions, but also form alliances and genuine friendships. We look forward to doing a second season with Claudia as we build together on the success of the first.”
BBC head of entertainment Kalpna Patel-Knight praised the “ambitious and edible hit”.
Further details will be announced in due course. The original version was created by Marc Pos, developed by All3Medias IDTV & RTL Creative Unit and produced by IDTV. All3Media International distributes the format worldwide and will sell the tape for both the UK and US versions. Executive producers for Studio Lambert Scotland are Mike Cotton, Sarah Fay and Toni Ireland, along with executive producer Abi Lambrinos.
