successor it ends
The hit HBO drama series is coming to an end with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorkers. It’s not a big surprise since Armstrong himself suggested the end and Brian Cox has been more explicit in certain interviews, while HBO head Casey Bloys has long said it’s up to Armstrong whether it ends.
The series returns for season four on Sunday, March 26. The season begins after patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrays his grown children, including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said: “There are a few different aspects. First of all, we could have said it as soon as I made up my mind, almost as we wrote it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We had it creatively, I think it’s a really good idea, because then the audience can just enjoy whatever comes as it comes without trying to understand things or perceive things in a certain way, with knowing that this is the last season. The contradictory thing is that we don’t Hide the ball very much on the program. I feel a responsibility to the viewers and personally I don’t want to feel like, ‘Oh, that’s it folks. That was the end.” I wouldn’t like it in a show, I think I would knowledge it comes to an end.”
In Season 4, the sale of the media conglomerate Waystar Royco to the technological visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) is getting closer and closer. The prospect of this seismic sale is fueling existential fears and family divisions among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will be like once the deal is closed. A power struggle ensues as the family contemplates a future in which their cultural and political influence is severely limited.
Alan Ruck, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, J. Smith-Cameron, Peter Friedman, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens, Hiam Abbass, Justine Lupe, Dagmara Dominczyk, Arian Moayed, Scott Nicholson, Zoë Winters, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Juliana Canfield, and Jeannie Berlin also plays.
Other cast members include Skarsgård, Cherry Jones, Hope Davis, Justin Kirk and Stephen Root.
Season 4 newcomers include Annabeth Gish, Adam Godley, Eili Harboe and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson. The returning cast includes Harriet Walter, James Cromwell, Natalie Gold, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Ashley Zukerman, Larry Pine, Mark-Linn Baker and Pip Torrens.
Armstrong, who also created the Channel 4 comedy peep show, admitted the ending was “a bit scary”.
“Who knows what the psychological reasons are, but the creative reasons were that it felt very useful not to make the final, final decision. You know, the sequel title is promising. I never thought it could go on like this forever. The ending was always a bit present for me. Since season 2, I’ve been trying to think, is this the next one or the one after that or the one after that?” he added.
Armstrong is executive producer and serves as showrunner. Adam McKay, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick, Jane Tranter, Mark Mylod, Tony Roche, Scott Ferguson, Jon Brown, Lucy Prebble, Will Tracy and Will Ferrell also serve as executive producers.
