Guy Ritchie brings Aladdin back to life in a new version released as a bonus this Friday night on the M6. An orphan, Aladdin survives as best he can by stealing from stalls. While escaping after a robbery, he falls under the spell of Princess Yasemin, who managed to escape from the sultan’s palace. He crosses paths with the powerful magician Jafar, who promises to make him rich enough to seduce a princess. In return, Aladdin must go to the cave of wonders, where a lamp is hidden. When Aladdin rubs the object, a blue genie appears ready to grant his three wishes. This turns him into a prince. Aladdin goes to court in this new guise and sees his lover there again. But Jafar wants the lamp back…
When director Guy Ritchie asks the actor to embody the genius, Will Smith hesitates, thinking of the late Robin Williams, who managed to do a memorable dubbing in the 1992 Disney-produced cartoon:I was afraid to take on this role. Robin really left no room to do better“The director finds the right words to persuade the actor:”Will, you will bring your energy, physical presence and musical touch to character. And you will be great!“
