Naomi Scott (Aladdin): "I’m free and I won’t let anyone shut me up in a box"

ARCHIVE. In this new version of Aladdin, in real shots, the glamorous British woman represents a daring and combative Jasmine. A role that should advance her among Hollywood stars. We met with the actor when he was released in cinemas in 2019.

What does Princess Jasmine represent to you?

Naomi Scott: As a teenager, I identified with three Disney heroes: Pocahontas, Mulan, whose courage I envy, and Jasmine. Three dark-skinned brunettes like me, born to an English father and an Indian mother. Still, Jasmine has clearly evolved since the 1993 cartoon!

In what way?

It was out of the question for me and I told the director to play a naive young woman who is only curious about love and marriage. Here, too, Jasmine is fighting for her and her family’s freedom, she grasps her destiny, she has the spirit of a leader. Year 2019: Women crave for bigger roles than romantic sidekicks.

In the movie you get the tube back This blue dream When Jasmine and Aladdin fly over the city on a magic carpet…

A magic moment! We were in osmosis, Mena Massoud (Who plays Aladdin, editor’s note) and me. I’m also commenting on an unpublished title by myself, not speakingWhere Jasmine expresses her anger and disappointment. You should know that I started my career by singing. My family is very religious, so am I, and I’ve been preaching in church since I was little. I started writing my own songs at the age of 15-16, then an agency noticed me and I recorded my first album.

Why did you want to be an actor?

Because I’m free and I won’t let anyone put me in a box. My father has always encouraged me to improve my abilities, to listen only to myself, my heart, my desires, not others. She’s very independent, so I want to keep changing music and cinema to embody strong heroines. It’s fun to take your anger out on the bad guys, just like here Power Rangers or in Angels of Charlie.

You are affiliated with the International Compassion NGO…

This organization raises money for very poor children. Especially when I went to Ethiopia, I met mothers with an extraordinary survival instinct. I also admire the female members of Compassion: They have feelings of self-sacrifice, they set an example for me. There’s nothing like helping others add meaning to your life.
