Jewish ghettos of World War II explored in Arte France Doc Feature

EXCLUSIVE: ARTE France commissioned a documentary about the role of the Jewish ghettos during the Holocaust.

Ghettos of the Shoah (La Shoah of the Ghetto) runs in the Prime Time History slot of the Culture Network. Pernel Media is associated with the creation of the 90-minute documentary with support from the Memory of the Shoah Foundation. Directed by Barbara Neckk.

At the beginning of World War II, between 1939 and 1941, more than 1,000 ghettos were established by the Nazis in Central and Eastern Europe. Poland alone had more than 300. At least half of Europe’s Jews lived in ghettos during the war, and more than 800,000 died there.

Through access to never-before-seen personal archives, films, letters and photographs, the document will bring a new historical perspective to the events.

Pernel is also producing a 60-minute version of the film for the international market.

Ghettos of the Shoah was commissioned by Fabrice Puchault and Anne Grolleron for ARTE France. Pernel was executive produced by Fabrice Frank.

“For the Jews of Eastern Europe, ghettos were the antechambers of death. When the Final Solution became a reality in 1942, the ghettos were gradually liquidated, but some remained an integral part of the Holocaust until the end of the war,” said Frank. “The film seeks to pay tribute to this vanished Jewish world and to give voice to the victims through their testimonies that show the hope, despair and spirit of spiritual, religious and even armed resistance of the Jews in the ghettos.”

Paris-based Pernal is behind shows like The real throne war, old superstructure And Sentenced to death for 20 years.
