Super Bowl Monday could become a public holiday in Tennessee under the proposed law

It’s real political football — fans in Tennessee won’t have to call in sick on Super Bowl Monday, according to two lawmakers.

A bill this week by Senator London Lamar and Democratic state Assemblyman Joe Towns Jr. would require Columbus Day to be replaced as a public holiday with the day after the Super Bowl.

“In the upcoming final version of the bill, we will not replace any other public holidays,” Rep. Cities said in a statement to Yahoo Sports. “But with more than 16 million Americans expected to skip work the day after the Super Bowl and about 8 million expected to request a day off, we’re talking about a serious blow to the workforce.

“My account just wants to see if we can give the rest of us a day off. Let’s face it, it doesn’t get much more American than the Super Bowl and not working the next day is becoming the norm. So maybe we should just codify it…or at least just talk about it.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles meet on February 11 in the 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona.

The bill needs bipartisan support. Republicans dominate the state legislature. It will also go into effect next year because the process of entering state law in Tennessee is long and tedious.
