NBC’s ‘La Brea’ likely to end with truncated season 3 as networks begin rolling out emergency layoffs

EXCLUSIVE: NBC announced earlier today that it is a sci-fi drama La Brea has been renewed for a third season. I was told that the recording would span six episodes and was concerned about the possibility of a strike by the writers and/or directors and actors, although this will likely be the final chapter of the show. Filming begins in March in Australia.

With the current WGA agreement expiring on May 1 and the DGA and SAG-AFTRA agreements running on June 30, a potential work stoppage could affect the start of production for the new broadcast season, forcing broadcasters to spend the first few weeks without bring new ones. Episodes of scripted series are no longer available. of autumn.

Possibly along those lines, I’ve heard that NBC has approached casting La Brea to do a short third season. Since series regulars are guaranteed a 10-episode minimum (meaning they must be paid for at least 10 episodes per season, regardless of how many episodes are produced), the network and sister studio Universal Television asked the cast to increase their minimum contract break to lower. guaranteed up to six episodes, sources said. In return, I learned that after Season 3, the actors were offered severance from the show – which they accepted – leaving them available for other jobs. (A typical regular broadcast contract spans six seasons.)

This means that La Brea will most likely end with season 3. (There’s a slim chance the show will continue with a new family played by a new cast.)

The possibility of strikes is expected to reduce the chances of renewal of other series such as La Brea, which is canceled this season as they can write and possibly have episodes produced before the possible work stoppage so they are ready for the fall. These bubble shows are safer bets than new series, whose pilots can’t be picked up until May, making them a tougher proposition for a fall launch. In addition, La Brea is manufactured outside the US, giving it an added advantage in a situation of potential union conflicts such as the current one.

La Brea, Received a straight-to-series order after production on the 2020 pilot was derailed by the pandemic, it got off to a solid start in fall 2021 with a 10-episode first season, making up for the 14 episodes that aired in the second season was produced, extended. As with many high-concept shows, ratings eventually dipped. Season 2B will continue back-to-back episodes tonight on NBC and Peacock the following day.

La Brea follows an epic family adventure after a massive hole in the ground opens up in Los Angeles, pulling people and buildings into a mysterious and dangerous wilderness where they have no choice but to band together to survive.

The cast includes Natalie Zea, Eoin Macken, Jon Seda, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chiké Okonkwo, Zyra Gorecki, Jack Martin, Veronica St Clair, Rohan Mirchandaney, Lily Santiago, Josh McKenzie, Tonantzin Carmelo and Michelle Vergara Moore.

Creator/Showrunner David Appelbaum is producing with Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, Rachel Kaplan, Chris Hollier, Adam Davidson, Bryan Wynbrandt, Steven Lilien, Ken Woodruff and Arika Lisanne Mittman. La Brea is produced by Universal Television and Matchbox Pictures of Australia, both divisions of Universal Studio Group, in association with Keshet Studios.
