Shinichiro Watanabe couldn’t get past the opening scene of the Netflix adaptation of his anime classic. Cowboy Bebop.
Speaking to Forbes, Watanabe said Netflix sent him “a video to watch and review.” But he couldn’t bear to see more than a few minutes of it.
“It started with a scene in a casino that made it very difficult for me to continue,” said Watanabe. “I stopped there and just saw that opening scene. It clearly wasn’t Cowboy Bebopand I realized in that moment that it wouldn’t be if I wasn’t involved Cowboy Bebop. I thought maybe I should have. Although the value of the original anime is now somehow much higher.
Netflix brought in Watanabe as a consultant for the project. But Watanabe claimed in a 2019 interview that his comments on the manuscript were likely unheard.
“I have no choice but to pray and hope that everything will be alright,” he added at the time.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation was not well received by fans, and received a lukewarm critical reception. It was canceled for a second season.
