today Weather presenter Al Roker made an emotional return to the morning show on Friday, telling his tearful co-hosts: “My heart is breaking right now. I’m just so excited to see you all and the whole crew. At the moment I’m just running on adrenaline.”
Roker was first admitted to hospital in November with blood clots in his lungs and leg. He was released on Thanksgiving Day but returned a short time later due to complications. He was released on December 8, but was absent today — as well as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting — since I got sick.
Welcomed back to the show’s climax today, Roker was welcomed back to the studio by co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. “I missed you guys so much,” Roker told them. “You are my second family”
Roker and his wife, ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts, later discussed his health scare with Kotb, Guthrie, Craig Melvin and Carson Daly, which Roberts said was far more serious than the public may have known.
“He’s a living, breathing miracle,” Roberts said, adding that her husband was a “medical mystery” for several weeks at the onset of his illness. “Al went through a lot of tests, a lot of endoscopes and so much that had to be done, and an operation, if you’ll allow me to say it, a big, big operation and we were just standing on pins and needles. and needles every day.”
“I’m not exaggerating,” she said. “Albeit a very, very, very sick man.”
Roker explained that he developed the blood clots after contracting Covid. “I had two complicated things,” he told colleagues. “I had blood clots which they think happened after I had Covid in September and then I started bleeding internally. I lost half my blood and they were trying to figure out where it was.
“In the end,” he continued, “they went in, did the surgery, and I ended up with two bleeding wounds. They had to cut out the colon and take out my gallbladder. I went in for surgery and got four for free .
