“You brought us back for another year,” crowed Andy Cohen from Times Square at the start of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage. But “there are some stipulations this year, some fine print.”
Cohen and Cooper were known to drink heavily during their previous visits during the traditional Times Square Countdown. Cohen, in particular, has become notorious for his alcohol-fueled diatribes, which saw New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and TV personality Ryan Seacrest lash out last year. As a result, CNN decided there was no alcohol during the live broadcast that year.
The alcohol ban was discussed above.
“We can’t drink,” Cohen said, emphasizing with a slight jump. “But it’s okay.” Cooper asked if Cohen would “make it” on air. His partner chimed in, “Do I have a bag of snacks?” I do not know. It’s a long night. It’s a telethon without a disease.”
Still, the duo vowed to continue, and they found a solution: They still toasted their audience on the hour, but without the alcohol.
What the duo promised was a “mystery shot.” With their eyes closed, the audience is shown what they are drinking and toasted with. The first shot was “pickle juice,” which made them both swallow hard.
Cohen suspected the juice was tomato juice, which he admitted he doesn’t like. Cooper claimed he never ate a pickle.
Both hosts followed the mystery shot from the juice box. “I prefer tequila,” Cohen said.
Four more mystery shots are lined up for the night.
