What can you take home from a hotel room and what can’t you?
That’s the question etiquette expert William Hanson answers in a viral TikTok post he filmed in a “sundeck” cabin on Dubai’s QE2 floating hotel, which has been viewed 2.5 million times.
Mr Hanson explains that “basically anything small” is good to take home, such as the dental and shaving kits, miniature shampoo and shower gel, and the slippers.
Mr. Hanson points out that the slippers in his room have the words “Love me, use me, take me home” written on them.
“Words to live by,” said Mr Hanson, who added in an email to MailOnline Travel: “You can also take the postcard with the beautiful photo of the hotel or the stationery with the details from the room and delete it if you like. “It’s good, accessible marketing for the hotel.”
So what not to pack before you check out?
In the video, Mr Hanson says: “Things like the cup or cups and saucers, the glasses, the pillow, the dressing gown… please leave them in the room as stealing is not good etiquette.”
Mr Hanson told MailOnline: “If you’re into china, you might find that it’s on sale at reception.” Always ask.

“And pillows and throw pillows, these are items you should never remove.” It’s amazing how many guests think they can get away with filling a suitcase or two. Again they may be for sale or the hotel may give you the name of the supplier.’
We have mr. Hanson asked if it was improper to give people hotel gifts.
He replied: “I probably wouldn’t give many people a free gift from a hotel, but a close friend or family member might get an extra pair of fluffy slippers, for example.”
“A few weeks before the UK went into lockdown, many Britons panicked. “I was staying in a hotel abroad and decided to steal the excess toilet paper roll to give to a friend as a (joking) hostess gift.”
And what little things does Mr. Hanson like to take with him?
He said: “I love taking the bag of bath salts home with me, especially after taking a bath at this hotel. Then, when I’m sitting in my own bathroom, I can close my eyes and imagine that I’m vacationing somewhere else again.”
