The New Year is officially in full swing and that means it’s time to book your 2023 vacation.
Most workers in the UK are entitled to 28 days off a year, but this year workers can get 48 days off by taking just 19 public holidays.
The British government has announced nine bank holidays this year, including an additional bank holiday to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III, who became monarch after the Queen’s death last year.

Careful distribution of annual leave over weekends and public holidays allows employees who work Monday to Friday to extend their free time
Every year the UK has a bank holiday to celebrate New Year, Good Friday, Easter, Christmas and Boxing Day.
The government also observes public holidays in early May, spring and summer.
But this year, Britons have been given an extra day to celebrate the king’s coronation, meaning the country will celebrate three bank holidays in May alone.
Banks and public offices are closed on 1, 8 and 29 May in honor of the Bank Holiday, the Coronation and Spring Break in early May.
It comes just weeks after the country will see a four-day weekend in April in honor of Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Here’s how MailOnline shows you how to maximize your free time in 2023:
April
Public holidays in England and Wales in 2023
January 2 – Monday – New Year’s Day (alternative day)
April 7 – Friday – Good Friday
April 10 – Monday – Easter Monday

May 8 – Monday – the coronation of King Charles
May 29 – Monday – Spring Break

If you work from Monday to Friday, you can get 10 days off if you book four days in April.
Good Friday falls on April 7 and Easter Monday on April 10. So if you book four days off for the Easter weekend, you get a 10-day break.
This means that from Saturday 1 April to Monday 10 April you only have a few days of annual leave.
Fully booked: April 3 to April 6 free from April 1 to April 10.
early May
If you book four days off after 1 May – the 1 May bank holiday – you get 10 days off for the price of four thanks to the Coronation weekend.
The coronation of Charles is marked by a public holiday on 8 May.
This means that you will have four days of annual leave from Saturday 29 April to Monday 8 May.
Fully booked: May 2 to May 5 to be free from April 29 to May 8
May and June
The Spring Break falls on Monday, April 29.
Britons who plan their annual holiday around the bank holiday can secure a nine-day break for just four days of holiday.
For this to work you must book from 30 May to 2 June.
This means that you will have four days of annual leave from Saturday 27 May to Saturday 4 June.
Fully booked: 30 May to 2 June to depart from 27 May to 4 June
August
With Tuesday to Friday off after the Monday bank holiday, August 28 offers another chance to get nine days off for just four.
This means that you will have four days of annual leave from Saturday 27 August to Sunday 3 September.
Fully booked: August 29 to September 1 to be free from August 28 to September 3
December
Christmas falls on a Monday this year, so it is automatically a public holiday.
Boxing Day – Tuesday 26 December – is also a public holiday.
Since New Year’s Day 2024 also falls on a Monday, you only need to book three days off to get 10 days off.
This means that you only have three holidays from Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January.
Fully booked: December 27 to December 29 to get a discount from December 23 to January 1
