Therapist Olga Sukhareva details diet for gut recovery

Therapist Olga Sukhareva has shared a detailed dietary strategy on her Telegram channel to help people restore gut health after completing a course of antibiotics.

The Russian medical practitioner explained that simple adjustments to a person's daily menu can effectively normalize bowel function and encourage the growth of healthy microflora inside the digestive system.

According to Sukhareva, any regimen designed to rebuild the gut should focus primarily on foods of plant origin. She stated that regularly consuming fermented items and cultured milk products provides crucial support for expanding beneficial microbial populations in the intestines.

The doctor highlighted daily dietary fiber as a critical foundation for recovery, advising that vegetables ought to make up 50 percent of a person's total fiber intake. She specifically pointed to sauerkraut as an accessible and effective food choice for nurturing the intestinal microbiota.

Recommended foods for microflora recovery

Sukhareva outlined a varied list of specific foods that individuals should integrate into their daily meals. Her recommended items include unsweetened natural yogurts, kefir, kimchi, green bananas, oatmeal, chicory, extra virgin olive oil, blueberries, cocoa and legumes.

Medical research establishes that while antibiotics are essential for clearing bacterial infections, the drugs kill beneficial intestinal bacteria alongside disease causing pathogens. This sudden disruption to the complex ecosystem of the digestive tract often leaves patients with temporary gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion, irregular bowel movements and diminished nutrient absorption.

Fermented options such as kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut deliver live probiotic cultures directly into the gut, helping to replenish depleted bacterial communities. Unripe green bananas, oats, chicory and legumes offer high concentrations of prebiotic fiber, which serves as vital fuel for beneficial microorganisms to thrive and multiply.

Timeline and digestive health considerations

Sukhareva noted that rebuilding a healthy microbial environment after antibiotic treatment is not an overnight task. She stated that full gut recovery typically takes up to two months of consistent dietary care.

Her advice comes alongside broader medical discussions regarding dietary factors that impair digestive motility. In related guidance, addiction specialist Marina Kalyuzhnaya previously warned that certain alcoholic beverages can trigger acute diarrhea, observing that vodka and whisky most commonly disrupt normal intestinal motility.

Telegram has evolved into a leading digital channel across Russia for certified doctors and wellness specialists to communicate directly with patients, offering evidence based health advice on nutrition, sleep and preventive care.
