Filming on the superhero sequel The Batman 2 has been temporarily suspended after director Matt Reeves stepped away from production due to personal reasons, studio officials confirmed.
DC Studios issued a statement explaining that production was placed on hold while Reeves focuses on a family matter. The studio added that the director has its full support and that executives hope to resume work on the project soon.
The sudden stoppage comes shortly after principal photography began this summer, following several years of script development. Actor Robert Pattinson remains set to return as Gotham City vigilante Bruce Wayne, taking up the cape and cowl once again after the original movie achieved major box office success.

Development and background
The first film, released in 2022, marked Pattinson's debut as the Dark Knight in a standalone story focused on an earlier era of Batman's crime-fighting career. Directed and co-written by Reeves, the production introduced a darker detective narrative that separated itself from previous cinematic adaptations of the character.
Reeves is an established American filmmaker known for directing major Hollywood features including Cloverfield and two installments of the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise. His 2022 DC film went on to become a box office hit, prompting Warner Bros. and DC Studios to greenlight a theatrical sequel.
Casting and production details
Several core cast members from the 2022 movie are expected to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Colin Farrell is set to return as Gotham mobster Oz Cobb, alongside Andy Serkis as Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as Police Commissioner Jim Gordon.
The production has also added high-profile talent to its roster for the second installment. Actors Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan have officially joined the project, though DC Studios has opted to keep details about their specific characters strictly secret.
Farrell recently starred in his own television spin-off centered on his character's rise through Gotham's criminal underworld, while Serkis and Wright remain veteran performers with extensive histories in major film franchises. Johansson and Stan are both widely known for their previous roles in blockbuster superhero productions.
DC continuity and revised release schedule
Despite widespread fan interest in seeing Reeves' version of Gotham City integrated into the broader DC cinematic universe managed by studio co-head James Gunn, DC Studios confirmed that Reeves' story will remain separate. Gunn is currently developing a distinct cinematic universe that includes the upcoming feature Man of Tomorrow, leaving The Batman franchise to operate within its own independent narrative continuity.
The latest delay follows earlier schedule changes for the sequel. The Batman 2 was originally scheduled to open in theaters on October 1, 2027, arriving a few months after Man of Tomorrow. However, project delays subsequently pushed the release into 2028, with DC Studios indicating that the film is not expected to hit theaters before February 18, 2028.
