Tate McRae is being mocked by fans after posting a TikTok video promoting the budget skincare brand Neutrogena that appeared to show her barely touching the products to her face.
The Canadian singer credited Neutrogena's products for being a fixture in her post-show skincare regime, using them in the clip to remove her stage makeup. Fans quickly pointed out that it looked like she wasn't actually applying the products at all.
Commenters noted that Tate hadn't even removed the lid from the moisturiser, and said her hand was blocking the makeup wipes from touching her skin. "Refusing to actually use the product you're marketing... interesting choice," one wrote, while another said, "Literally not even using the wipe her hands are in the way of the wipe."
Fans compare her to Kylie Jenner
One fan wrote, "It's giving that one video where Kylie pretends to use her own products," while another pointed out, "Not the peel back piece still being on the moisturiser." A third joked, "So we wiped our makeup off but still manage to have a full smoky eye and full coverage."
Others focused on the money involved. "Think about how much she got paid to do this and this is the effort she gave," one fan wrote, while another said, "I can't believe Neutrogena approved this." Daily Mail has contacted a representative for Neutrogena for comment.
The video sparked a wave of comments from Tate's followers poking fun at the clip.
Split from Jack Hughes
The backlash comes just days after it emerged that Tate has split from her boyfriend, NHL star Jack Hughes, with Page Six reporting that Hughes was the one who decided to call off the relationship. The couple were first spotted on a dinner date at Anton's in New York City's West Village in November, before being seen on a stroll together weeks later. Hughes reportedly messaged McRae first on social media, and according to Us Weekly, the pair started "exclusively" dating in March.
Scrutiny after Kid Laroi split
McRae recently said she felt overwhelmed by the scrutiny she faced after ending her year-long relationship with Kid Laroi. "It was really scary and overwhelming, I would never talk that way, even about my friends' lives," she told Rolling Stone. "I didn't realize how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life - because no one knows the full story of anything, ever."
She added that she hates people painting a situation as worse than it is, but said, "he's going to write songs and I'm going to write songs, and that's our way of expressing ourselves... once it's out there, it's not mine anymore." McRae, who released her debut album I Used To Think I Could Fly in 2022, said the past year of fame has taken a toll: "I don't even recognize that person. I feel I've aged 10 years in the past year."
