Film company K24 will release the drama Summer in Baden starring Philip Yankovsky on November 5 following the debut of its official trailer.
The film adapts the novel of the same name by writer Leonid Tsypkin. It tells the story of an intellectual from the Soviet Union who grows disillusioned with his life and decides to change it. The man becomes captivated by the life story of novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky and his intense passion for gambling, leading him to gamble everything he owns.
Philip Yankovsky takes the lead role alongside Maria Smolnikova and Pavel Tabakov, supported by an ensemble cast. Yankovsky is known for his role in the classic Soviet drama Mirror, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. Smolnikova previously appeared in the television series Head of Intelligence, while Tabakov starred in the feature film Young Man.
Adaptation and Creative Team
Director Anton Zhelnov helmed the feature drama. Zhelnov previously wrote the documentary film Sasha Sokolov: The Last Russian Writer, which focused on the acclaimed emigre novelist. His latest project brings Tsypkin's literary work to the screen, exploring the psychological parallel between a modern observer and Dostoevsky's famous gambling debts in 19th century Europe.
The source novel was written by Leonid Tsypkin, a Soviet medical researcher and author who completed the book in secret before his death in 1982. The story draws inspiration from Dostoevsky's real life stay in Baden-Baden, Germany, where the author struggled with roulette addiction while writing his novels. The literary adaptation examines how that historical obsession impacts the life of a disillusioned reader decades later.
