Nineteen-year-old student courier Tiraphat has died in hospital after his motorcycle wheel fell into an open drainage pipe on a street in Phuket, Thailand. The fatal accident occurred on the evening of September 1 as the teenager was traveling to his college after delivering an order to a client, according to local news outlet The Thaiger.
Tiraphat was riding along a thoroughfare where maintenance work on a drainage collector was underway. A drainage collector is an underground pipe system designed to handle surface runoff and prevent street flooding. The open pipe had been left exposed near the sidewalk without any fencing, warning markers, or protective barricades around it. When the front wheel of his motorcycle lodged in the open pipe, Tiraphat fell violently onto the road and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him.
Phuket is a popular island province located in southern Thailand along the Andaman Sea coast. Road transport across the island relies heavily on motorcycles and scooters, which are widely used by students, delivery workers, and daily commuters navigating urban and suburban traffic.
Investigation and legal proceedings
Following the fatal crash, law enforcement investigators summoned the contractor responsible for the drainage project for questioning. Authorities suspect the contractor of criminal negligence for leaving the hazardous excavation completely unguarded next to a public street.
If charged and convicted of negligence resulting in death, the contractor faces a fine of up to 200,000 baht, the national currency of Thailand, and a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years. Under Thai law, construction site managers and contractors are legally obligated to secure hazards on public thoroughfares.
Tiraphat had taken up part-time work as a delivery courier to support his mother financially while continuing his education. He was enrolled as a student at a technology college in Thalang. Thalang is a district situated in the northern part of Phuket province, serving as a key educational, industrial, and residential hub for the island.
