A 53-year-old Russian firefighter who fell into a coma while on holiday in Pattaya, Thailand, has been denied further medical care after hospital doctors demanded an additional payment of 1 million rubles from his family.
Alexander, who works as a firefighter in his hometown of Khabarovsk, traveled to the Thai resort city for a vacation with his wife and two children. A few days after arriving, he developed a high fever, severe seizures, and hallucinations before losing consciousness.
According to reports published by the Telegram channel Mash, Alexander was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in a general ward shared by 60 patients. Preliminary medical assessments indicate that he contracted pneumonia stemming from an outbreak of the Omicron NB.1.8.1 coronavirus variant in Thailand.
Dispute over medical payment
The family had traveled to Thailand without medical travel insurance. Alexander's wife has already paid 500,000 rubles toward his hospital treatment, but medical staff have refused to continue treating him unless an additional 1 million rubles is provided.
Clinic representatives stated that the requested 1 million rubles serves as financial security in the event that the patient suffers respiratory arrest. The medical facility has turned down requests for a payment plan in installments and threatened to withhold resuscitation services if the debt is not settled.
To cover the mounting medical costs, Alexander's wife took out several bank loans, but the total funds raised remain insufficient to satisfy the demands of the clinic.
Health complications for organ donor
Alexander's condition is worsening due to existing health complications, specifically the absence of one of his kidneys. He became a living organ donor 16 years ago when he donated a kidney to save his daughter.
Individuals who have donated a kidney live with a single functioning organ responsible for filtering waste and maintaining fluid balance in the body. While a single healthy kidney can manage normal bodily functions, severe systemic infections such as pneumonia place increased physiological stress on the organ, elevating the risk of severe complications during illness.
