Showrunner Oren Uziel has revealed potential story details for a second season of Spider-Noir after Amazon canceled the Nicolas Cage superhero series.
Amazon officially ended production on Spider-Noir on September 5 following its first season. The cancellation came despite high ratings from both critics and viewers, as well as five Emmy Award wins for the television show.
Uziel explained that a potential second season was unlikely to return to New York City. He said the creative team was considering moving the narrative to Los Angeles or sending the character to Europe during the 1930s.
Uziel stated that if the decision had been up to him, a second season would probably have taken place in a new setting. He noted that Los Angeles possessed a deep noir atmosphere for the writers to dive into, while European noir traditions provided another setting to explore.
He added that with the story set in 1933, the show was approaching World War II, which he called a highly unstable period capable of generating numerous stories.
Spider-Noir Premise and Background
Spider-Noir focuses on an aging private detective in 1930s New York. The hero is forced to put on his Spider-Man suit once again to battle his past life and fight the criminal underworld in the city.
Nicolas Cage starred in the lead role of the live-action series, which premiered on May 27. Cage, who recently starred in the horror movie Longlegs, previously voiced the same Spider-Man Noir character in the animated feature film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The superhero character originated in Marvel Comics as a gritty, Great Depression era version of Peter Parker. The television adaptation brought the comic book detective into live action on Amazon Prime Video, combining traditional comic book superhero elements with classic hard-boiled detective fiction.
Future of the Series
Despite winning five Emmy Awards, the show officially will not receive a second season from Amazon. The decision leaves the proposed storylines set in Los Angeles or pre-war Europe unrealized as production on the superhero drama remains closed.
