Solius has launched an over-the-counter wall-hanging light device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to deliver personalized ultraviolet B therapy and counteract vitamin D deficiency.
The new device carries a price of $2,995 and promises to "deliver the health benefits of the sun with 99 percent less total UV risk."
Designed as a single slim panel that hangs from a wall and connects directly to a power outlet, the unit administers a targeted dose of ultraviolet B (UVB) light to activate beneficial biological processes without causing skin damage.
Sessions require five minutes every week with the device positioned to face the user's back. Solius states that the system cannot be "overused" because it monitors light output and positioning to ensure safe and effective therapy delivery.
To put the safety margin into perspective, Solius notes that a full year of weekly therapy involves less ultraviolet exposure risk than five minutes of afternoon sun.

Personalized Skin Analysis and Biological Process
The technology works by providing each user with an initial skin analysis to calculate the exact dose of UVB radiation needed for their individual skin type.
Solius states that "consistent weekly therapies help maintain the sunlight-driven processes your body relies on, helping to counteract some of the physiological effects tied to insufficient sunlight exposure over time."
Explaining the immediate physiological response, the company shared: "While you may not feel anything during therapy, the moment UVB light touches your skin, a cascade of biological processes immediately begins."
Within seconds of exposure to UVB light, human skin converts 7-dehydrocholesterol, a compound present in epidermal tissue, into previtamin D3. This precursor becomes active vitamin D3 in the body over the following 24 to 48 hours.
Exposure to UVB light also triggers the activation of key neurotransmitters, nitric oxide and essential hormones throughout the body.
Discussing these chemical changes, Solius shared: "These molecules improve mood, energy, stress balance, motor control and learning, and provide long-term neuroprotection against cognitive decline."
In addition, UVB light strengthens skin and gut microbiomes, the complex communities of microorganisms living on the skin and inside the digestive tract. Solius notes that this strengthening "improves skin health and appearance, reduces chronic inflammation and supports digestion, immunity, and mood regulation."

The Prevalence of Vitamin D Deficiency
Stepping out into natural sunlight regulates sleep cycles, lowers blood pressure and enhances mental health, while also providing 90 per cent of human vitamin D.
Although food sources of the nutrient include fatty fish and egg yolks, the Cleveland Clinic, a non-profit academic medical center based in Ohio, estimates that 35 percent of adults in the United States suffer from vitamin D deficiency.
Dr Mike Ellis, a licensed internal medicine physician and medical director of Keep Glowing Medical Spa in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, told the Daily Mail that the factors causing this widespread deficiency are "multifaceted."
Explaining lifestyle factors, Dr Ellis said: "People are spending less time outdoors and getting less sun exposure now than that have in the past as more people spend time indoors or apply a strong SPF to protect against dangerous UV radiation and decrease cancer risk or skin aging."
He noted that weight and diet trends play a major role, stating: "There is an increasing number of people who are overweight and obese, the fat in our body will retain vitamin D leaving less available in the bloodstream, along with the obesity trend is the poor diets many Americans eat that lack good sources of vitamin D."
Dr Ellis added: "Other reasons which can decrease vitamin D are medications such as common medications taken to treat high cholesterol and weight loss medications, as well as poor intestinal absorption from conditions that cause inflammation of the gut."
When vitamin D levels fall too low, individuals can experience muscle weakness, weak bones, impaired immunity and mood changes such as anxiety and depression.

Medical Expert Analysis and Safety Precautions
Addressing the potential of the $2,995 device, Dr Ellis, who has not used Solius personally, stated: "Personal sunlight devices can be an effective way to increase vitamin D levels during the winter months or in people who have low vitamin D due to low gut absorption."
He highlighted the importance of specific light wavelengths, noting: "It is important to make sure you purchase a device that emits UVB light as this is the spectrum of light that is vital to the metabolism of vitamin D."
Evaluating the unit's technical specifications, Dr Ellis said: "The Solius device does have the proper UVB light spectrum so could be a good option for those who are deficient in vitamin D."
However, Dr Ellis issued a brief word of caution regarding certain high-risk groups, warning against device use for people with a history of or active skin cancer, as well as individuals taking photosensitizing medications.
Gary Brecka, a longevity expert and host of The Ultimate Human Podcast, agreed that modern indoor living restricts natural light access.
"We live indoors. We control our lighting and our air temperature. We work under artificial light, and when it gets cold we layer up, so even less sunlight reaches the skin. And we've been taught to fear the sun," Brecka told the Daily Mail.
Brecka discussed how modern wellness technology mimics natural light, stating: "The best of these technologies take the best of what mother nature has to offer us and just make it convenient."
He compared the system to existing phototherapy devices: "Red light therapy is isolating some of the beneficial wavelengths from the sun, and a device built to trigger vitamin D production is working on the same principle."
Identifying the primary target audience for the unit, Brecka explained: "For somebody who is housebound, in a care setting, or living through a northern winter, I understand the appeal."
He added: "A controlled dose of the right wavelengths for people who genuinely cannot get outside is a reasonable use case."
While Brecka concluded that there is definitely a place for such technologies, he emphasized that natural sunlight is often overlooked despite being "free and accessible."
Brecka noted: "The problem is thinking a lamp replaces the sun... The device is a refinement, not the foundation."
