Moths are among the insects most commonly found in homes during spring, when rising temperatures encourage their activity. Their presence poses a particular risk to garments made from natural fibres, which the insects can damage over time.
Specialists recommend tackling the problem with a two-step approach: a thorough clean followed by homemade repellent sachets made from natural ingredients.
Start with a vinegar clean
The first step, according to cleaning specialists, is to wipe down the inside of the wardrobe with a mixture of water and vinegar. They say the solution helps reduce the number of eggs and larvae present and creates a less hospitable environment for the insects.
The pest-control team at Hisan explains that the smell of vinegar can also interfere with the pheromones and chemical signals moths use to navigate and reproduce, making it one of the most widely used natural preventive remedies.
How to make a moth-repellent sachet
As a follow-up, small repellent pouches can be made using a fine mesh or tulle bag filled with natural ingredients. Specialists suggest placing dried citrus peel from oranges or lemons in the bag, then adding aromatic herbs such as rosemary, lavender or eucalyptus. If those plants are not available, cotton wool soaked in a few drops of essential oil can be substituted.
The bag should be closed and placed inside wardrobes or drawers where clothing is stored. Its contents should be refreshed periodically to maintain the repellent effect.
Another option is to fill a tulle bag with around 30 cloves, alone or combined with lavender. According to Hisan specialists, the eugenol found in cloves acts on the nervous system of adult moths and disrupts their olfactory receptors, making reproduction more difficult and the space less attractive for them to remain in.
