Seth Hoffman Named Showrunner for Walking Dead: Dead City

Screenwriter Seth Hoffman has returned to The Walking Dead franchise after a decade to take over as showrunner for the third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Hoffman previously served as a writer during seasons four, five and six of the original flagship series. He has now assumed leadership of the spin-off series centered on central characters Negan and Maggie as the production shifts toward a theme that was largely absent during his earlier tenure: hope.

The third season of the spin-off continues to move away from the persistent tone of despair that defined the early years of the franchise. Speaking at the San Diego Comic-Con convention, Hoffman explained that returning to the zombie apocalypse at this stage was particularly compelling to him because the world of the story has changed completely.

Shift toward hope in season three

Reflecting on his previous work on seasons four, five and six, Hoffman recalled that it was a very, very bleak time for the series. During those years, the characters passed through some of their darkest moments, and survival constantly appeared to depend on enduring consecutive tragedies.

In contrast, Hoffman noted that the current storyline allows the creative team to explore an emotion that was previously much harder to justify, specifically the possibility of building a better future for the survivors.

Hoffman gained firsthand experience with the darker era of The Walking Dead when he joined the writing staff during season four. That season featured the destruction of the prison community by The Governor, which triggered one of the most devastating crises for the main group of protagonists. He subsequently wrote for seasons five and six, contributing to major narrative milestones including the invasion of a massive walker horde into the Alexandria safe zone.

New era for Negan and Maggie in Manhattan

The Walking Dead originally premiered in 2010, following survivor groups in a world devastated by a zombie pandemic. The spin-off series Dead City relocates the narrative to an isolated and devastated Manhattan, where former enemies Negan and Maggie are forced to navigate their fraught relationship while striving to build something beyond mere survival.

Although their personal dynamic remains complicated, Hoffman emphasized that the current narrative presents a genuine opportunity to transform past pain into progress. Both characters are attempting to leave their historical conflicts behind as they focus on constructing a new community structure in the ruins of New York.

As Hoffman takes charge of the future of Dead City, other major storylines across the expanded franchise are also approaching major milestones, with long-time character Daryl Dixon set to say goodbye in 2027.
