Russian woman finds hair inside breast implants in Vietnam

A Russian woman named Anastasia who travelled to Vietnam for cosmetic surgery aborted the procedure at a clinic in Ho Chi Minh City after discovering a red hair and air bubbles inside her new breast implants.

According to the Telegram channel Shot Proverka, Anastasia had flown to the Southeast Asian country alongside her young child to replace her existing breast implants with larger medical units. To accommodate her stay, she rented local accommodation and hired a nanny to care for her child during the planned medical treatment.

Prior to entering the operating theatre, clinic medical staff handed Anastasia two factory sealed packages containing the silicone implants so that she could inspect their product packaging, serial numbers, and official labelling.

When Anastasia attempted to scan the identification QR code printed on the medical packaging, the code failed to read. She then used a flashlight to examine the sealed items more closely.

Discovery of defective implants

Upon illuminating the transparent packaging, Anastasia discovered a stray red hair alongside small specks of foreign debris embedded inside one of the implants. A close inspection of the second implant revealed unexplained bubbles suspended within the silicone filler.

Anastasia immediately cancelled the scheduled operation and handed the contaminated medical devices directly to a representative from the implant manufacturing company.

Breast augmentation procedures rely on medical grade silicone or saline implants, which are required to be manufactured in cleanroom environments to avoid biological and physical contamination. Foreign debris or structural defects within an implant present severe health risks, including post operative bacterial infections, tissue inflammation, and structural failure.

Financial losses and uncompensated costs

Following the cancellation, the patient received a full refund of 500,000 rubles for the cost of the unused medical implants and planned procedure.

However, Anastasia was denied reimbursement for an additional 170,000 rubles that she had incurred on non refundable expenses, including international round trip airfare, apartment rentals, and nanny services.

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is the commercial financial hub and largest metropolis in Vietnam. The city has become a frequent destination for international medical tourists seeking elective cosmetic procedures in Southeast Asia. Medical tourism carries risks when overseas patients face unexpected surgical cancellations or defective equipment, leaving travelers with unrecoverable travel costs.

Shot Proverka noted that foreign plastic surgery complications have raised concerns elsewhere, citing a recent case in Brazil where a foreign fashion blogger died in a hotel room during post operative recovery alongside unidentified medication and alcohol.
