Russian travel blogger Marina Yershova has shared a list of countries she considers ideal for first-time international travelers, writing on the Zen blogging platform.
Yershova said the Caucasus region is one of the best places to begin exploring the world beyond Russia’s borders, pointing to short flight times, excellent food, and hospitable people.
She described Azerbaijan as a country that won her over with its markets, adding that Russian is widely spoken there and visitors are unlikely to get lost.
Armenia, she said, held a special place in her affections. She described it as feeling homey, with locals quick to strike up conversations, offer directions, treat visitors to fruit, or share family stories.
Georgia rounded out her Caucasus picks. She noted that while Russian is received differently there, it can often be used in tourist areas, hotels, and cafes.
Yershova also recommended Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan for first-time travelers. She said the world turns out to be far kinder than the news sometimes suggests.
