A 19-year-old Russian university student named Anna has disappeared in Thailand after withdrawing her savings and traveling to Southeast Asia, according to Russian Telegram news channel Mash.
The student, who is from the western Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, had accumulated funds provided by her parents in a personal savings account. She was known to manage her money carefully and had previously lent 350,000 rubles to her brother. However, she unexpectedly asked her brother to return the loan in the spring before flying to Asia.
Police officers established that Anna boarded a flight to China on May 19 and arrived in Thailand on May 21. A few days after her departure, Anna's mother received a text message from her daughter asking the family not to search for her. Her parents subsequently filed a missing persons report with law enforcement authorities.
Family Suspicions and Border Discovery
Relatives of the missing student suspect that Anna may have been kidnapped. Family members stated that she was a high-achieving student with no history of personal conflicts or domestic disputes that would prompt a voluntary departure.
On the weekend of August 8 to August 9, authorities discovered an exhausted 19-year-old Russian woman bearing visible marks of physical abuse near the Thai border with Myanmar. Police sent a photograph of the rescued woman to Anna's brother, but he reviewed the image and confirmed that she was not his sister.
Nizhny Novgorod, situated at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers in western Russia, is the administrative center of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Thailand, located in Southeast Asia, shares a long western border with Myanmar that spans mountainous terrain.

Anna's disappearance follows a similar incident involving a male Russian tourist who vanished without a trace in the Thai capital of Bangkok. In that case, when the traveler's anxious mother phoned his mobile device, an unidentified Thai man answered, attempted to speak with her briefly, and then stopped taking calls.
Bangkok is Thailand's capital and major transportation hub, serving as the main entry point for millions of foreign visitors annually. Concerns regarding tourist safety in the region have grown following separate criminal investigations involving foreign nationals across Southeast Asia.
