A Russian air strike killed a child and injured at least five other people in Kyiv and its surrounding region early on Wednesday, Ukrainian officials reported.
The missile and drone attack damaged residential buildings, warehouses, key infrastructure and parked vehicles, while sparking active fires across multiple neighborhoods in the Ukrainian capital during the early morning hours.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated on Telegram that fires broke out in buildings across the Svyatoshynsky, Obolonsky and Holosiivsky districts. Klitschko added that two people suffered injuries during the strike inside the capital, including one woman who was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Klitschko, a former professional heavyweight boxing champion who has served as mayor of Kyiv since 2014, regularly provides live updates on emergency operations in the capital. Ukrainian officials rely heavily on Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging platform, to broadcast rapid air raid alerts and structural damage reports.
Missile and drone strikes hit capital
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv regional military administration, reported on Telegram shortly before 5:00 a.m. that a child was killed and three other people were injured in the wider region. Tkachenko stated that the bombardment was carried out using a combination of missiles and uncrewed aerial strike systems.
Journalists from the Reuters news agency present in the capital reported hearing loud explosions echoing across the city earlier in the morning. The targeted districts represent major municipal areas of Kyiv, with Svyatoshynsky located in the western sector, Obolonsky in the north and Holosiivsky in the southern area.
Tkachenko heads the regional military administration responsible for coordinating civil defense and emergency response throughout the Kyiv region surrounding the capital city. Reuters is a global news agency headquartered in London that maintains news teams in Ukraine to cover military actions and civilian impacts.
Officials reported that Russia's aerial bombardment of the Ukrainian capital and surrounding areas was continuing.
